Rock Of Ages captures The Band in concert at the Academy of Music in New York City on New Year’s Eve 1971. The original LP was released on August 15, 1972 with 18 tracks from the show. A 2-disc CD reissue in 2001 added 10 additional tracks to complete the program, with Bob Dylan joining The Band on vocals and guitar for the last four. Whichever version you choose, you’ll hear an exuberant, rockin’ performance of covers and classic songs from their first three studio albums, with “Across The Great Divide,” “This Wheel’s On Fire” and “The Shape I’m In” being particularly spirited due to the inclusion of a horn section led by the legendary New Orleans producer Allen Toussaint. Rock Of Ages is one of my favorite albums and a terrific live album. It is available on Amazon (but not iTunes) and The Band is in Dr. Rock’s Playlist Vault.
